Mirror, Muse, Oracle: Using Tarot in Your Art Practice

Art journal spread of the Fool archetype, open on a desk with tarot cards, candles and art supplies

There's a particular tone people use when they find out I work with the cards - half curious, half careful - right before they ask: but do you believe in them?

I want to gently set that question down. Not because it's unwelcome, but because it assumes there's one true thing the cards are, and one right way to be in relationship with them. I don't believe in singular truths like that. I believe in the both/and. I believe truth is a plural.

So - I hold all of it at once.

They are psychological images, symbols with which one plays
— Jung

They are a mirror - I sit with an archetype and it shows me back to myself, not always the parts I've made peace with.

They are a door - a threshold into the deep psyche, into the places language hasn't reached yet and maybe never will.

They are muse - each archetype endlessly, extravagantly generous with images, provocations, beginnings.

They are the old human patterns themselves - goddess, hero, shadow, star made visible, made small enough to hold in the hand, even as they hold centuries.

And yes. They are oracle. Divination. Intuition. Channel. I won't pretend not to know what I know. When you sit with an archetype and something in you knows - bone-deep, wordless - I am not going to explain that away for the sake of sounding reasonable.

What I teach isn't fortune-telling. But that's not the same as saying the cards are silent on what's coming, or that the knowing that rises when you turn one over is nothing. I simply turn the practice toward a different horizon: inward, and onto the page.

Because in the studio - in my art journal, in a half-started painting - an archetype becomes something else entirely.

Altar spread for an intuitive tarot practice — Wildwood deck, flowers, feathers, candles

An archetype is a beginning when you have none. A palette. A mood you didn't choose but that chose you. It's a way of asking your work a question and then getting out of the way long enough to let it answer. Sit with the Tower and your painting cracks open along a seam you didn't know was there. Sit with the Star and something in you softens toward hope you'd forgotten you were rationing. You explore an archetype and connections below the surface emerge in new ways.

You're no longer creating from the thin surface of the day. You're drawing from the well - the deep, intuitive well each of us carries - in dialogue with the whole of the human inheritance. Every artist who ever sat with these same archetypes before you. Every hand that reached for the same old story and made it new.

That's what the cards are for, in my hands, in this work. Not to pin your future down and hold it still. To open you. To your image. Your intuition. Your own unfolding becoming.

(This is the beating philosophical heart of my Arcana Mysteries work - archetypes in art, as mirror, as portal, as yes, oracle, woven into a living creative practice.)

We ourselves are myth, we ourselves are stories.
— Rachel Pollack

They don't tell you what will happen. They show you what is already moving in you.

And then what happens when you pick up a brush…

The next session of Arcana Mysteries begins on the 26th of October

Galia Alena
I’m a visual poet working in just about any medium I can lay my hands on although I am a professionally trained photographer and a so called “self-taught” artist (of course there have been many teachers on that path). I’m in love with the creative process. I’m a beauty unveiler, light huntress, moment caresser and visionary poetess. Ultimately, all of my work is about helping people peel back the layers to experience the intense beauty of each moment allowing access to both their intuitive wisdom and a deeper connection to spirit and self. (Because the beauty of this life cracks our hearts open and it is through the cracks that light can flow both in and out and connect us back to our divine selves) That is what I do and I do it through photography, art, journaling and teaching. I live in the insanely beautiful Blue Mountains, just shy of Sydney, with my family, our cat and all the winged ones who frequent our garden. Each day here is a wondrous delight of tiny miracles through either the glorious light or magical mists. I would love to work with you, have a look around and see where you are called...
