Published, Featured & Teaching

I’ve never been one to collect accolades — the making has always mattered more than the mention. But for the record, and because the years are real, here is a little of where the work has travelled and who I’ve made alongside.

Teaching — a decade and more

I have been teaching art journaling online since around 2011, and keeping and teaching travel journals since 2018. In 2017 I founded Art is Magic, the online school and community that is now home to my workshops, including Travel Vignettes.

Its flagship, Make Create Express, celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2026. Over those ten years, more than 100 guest artists from around the world have taught within it, and Art is Magic has welcomed more than 40,000 students across its classrooms.

Taught alongside

Make Create Express has been a decade-long gathering of extraordinary teachers. Among the many I’ve had the joy of hosting and making alongside: Idania Salcido (Danita Art) · Tracy Verdugo · Mary Beth Shaw · Carolyn Dube · Effy Wild · Shiloh Sophia · Connie Solera · Juliana Coles · Joanne Sharpe · Helen Colebrook · Jodi Ohl · Mindy Tsonas · Kiala Givehand · Whitney Freya · Angela Fehr · Rakefet Hadar · Vanessa Oliver-Lloyd · Robyn McClendon · Laly Mille · Chris Zydel · Fonda Clark Haight · Amanda Grace · Renata Loree · Emma Petitt · Holly McLaughlin · Eulalia Mejia· — and more than a hundred others.

 Invited to teach

’ve also been welcomed as a guest teacher and collaborator in projects created by others:

Wanderlust (Everything Art, UK) · Willowing (Willowing Arts) · 21 Secrets (Connie Solera / Dirty Footprints Studio) · Sketchbook Revival (Karen Abend) · Spectrum (Hali Karla) · Angel at My Table [c. 2011] · and a Creative Art Retreat in Virginia, USA (2012), where I taught in-person workshops in art journaling and photography.

I was also part of the “Blue Team” that created a watercolour — Starlorn — for Art to Basic.

Background & recognition

Before teaching online, I trained and worked as a professional photographer — Diploma in Photography, and a BA in Literature and Women’s Studies. I ran my own newborn and portrait studio, NewLife Photography, in Sydney from 1998. My early work was recognised by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), with two silver and a bronze award.

From 2012 I taught photography online for the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) in New Zealand, and contributed to the redevelopment of its Photography Diploma, rewriting several of its subjects.

The work has always been the point. But it helps, sometimes, to say plainly where it has been.
